Forms of the Indefinite Article

We use "a" with a word beginning with a consonant. We generally use "an" with a word beginning with a vowel. BUT when the word begins with the sound /ju/, then we use "a".

  • a consonant, a school teacher
  • an elephant, an octopus
  • a university professor, a European country
