Compromise or Promise

The word comprometer in Spanish is translated as to compromise or to agree to in English. To compromise in English means to give up a little of one's own position in a negotiation to try to come to an agreement. But making a promise or agreeing to do something is better expressed by the word, to undertake. When Zapatero was making his speeches after winning the election, he was undertaking and promising to do certain things, not making compromises.
